"In this company, workmanship is not a dirty word, that much is clear. The work of Irmine Remue is supported by it, but that craft never becomes a straitjacket. During the virtuoso application of it, her pen and pencil drawings, lavis (washes) and graphics gain a sense of freedom. This carefree mastery of technique allows her to let the marks dissolve to an extreme, almost abstract point, without any fear of losing control. This is something she has in common with dancers. They know the range of their own muscles and steps learnt, but also trust just as faultlessly in feeling, a partner or centrifugal forces. That accuracy brings her landscapes back to the drawings of greats such as Bruegel, Rembrandt or Turner, her figures to sketches by Rodin, her stains to oriental prints. Not because they resemble them, or beckon to the past in a mature way. But because their structure touches on a kind of universal quality of the strong drawing: an apparently obvious ease with which it is created, based on experience and courage."
